The Great Vaccine Debate Miss Catherine Sarlo I.S 10 Horace Greeley |
Introduction:
Since
March 2020, we have been living through the Covid 19 Pandemic. As stated in the dictionary, a pandemic is
“an epidemic of infectious diseases that has spread across a large region,
for instance multiple continents or worldwide, affecting a substantial number
of people”. Corona Virus (SARS-COV2/Covid
19), is a respiratory disease cause by a new (novel) coronavirus that was
first discovered in China. To date,
Covid 19 has been found in more than 80 locations internationally and in the
United States of America. Researchers
have been tasked with an urgent public health priority to find a safe and
effective vaccine to prevent Covid 19.
As of March 2021, there 4 major pharmaceutical companies administering
vaccines across the world. Three major
pharmaceutical companies are providing vaccines in the United States of
America. Some people feel the vaccine
was created and distributed too quickly and they will not be getting it. Others feel that they “trust the science”
and they are getting it as soon as possible in the hopes that we will soon
return to our pre-pandemic days. |
Task (s): ·
Each student will research SARS-COV2
(Covid 19), and complete the attached activity book. ·
Each student will write a short paragraph
about what it means to have Emergency use authorization. (Students will watch the short video) ·
Each student will watch a short video on
how the Covid 19 vaccine works. Students will complete a worksheet that goes
along with the video. ·
Each student will compare the three
vaccines that are offered in the United States and complete a chart. (Modera, Pfizer, and Johnson and Johnson) ·
The Great Debate- Students will be broken
into groups and will have a debate. 4

Process: Step
1: Students will research SARS-COV2 (Covid 19). They will complete an activity
booklet. (Primer Activity- What is
Covid 19? What does Covid 19 feel like? How
does someone get Covid 19? How do we prevent the spread of Covid 19?) Step
2: Students will learn about EUA.
Emergency Use Authorization. Students will watch a video and discuss
the difference between EUA and FDA approval.
Step
3: Students will discuss what it means to be vaccinated. How does a vaccine work? How does the new
Covid 19 vaccine work? Student will watch and video and discussion the
vaccination process. Step
4: Students will compare the 3 pharmaceutical companies that were given EUA
for the Covid 19 vaccine. They will
complete a chart with basic information about all three vaccines. Step
5: Students will be placed in groups and a random given 1 of 4 sides to take
in The Great Vaccine Debate. |

Conclusion: There is a ton of information out there about the Coronavirus and the 3 major vaccines given in the United States. I am so happy that we had the opportunity to share our research and learn more about how vaccines are developed and trials take place during a pandemic. Hopefully, we can share some information with our classmates about way that we can try and prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. |
