INTRODUCTION
What is happening with
the honey bees? Honey bees are not extinct yet. They are considered an
endangered species. An endangered species means that there are very few left
and if we do not try to save them they will soon be
extinct. An extinct species means that there will not be a single honey bee
left on Earth. The honey bees have three very important jobs. There are drone
bees, queen bees, and worker bees. All three of these bees are very important
to the hive. A hive is where the bees live. The drone bees, queen bees, and
worker bees all have different jobs but they all work together to help the
hive.
TASK
The honey bees need
you! Along with your partner, you will research why each of the honey bees are
important to the hive and what would happen if they were to become extinct. By
the end of the six days, you and your partner will create a Flipgrid using your
research.
PROCESS & RESOURCES
Using the PPA Process,
you will follow the six steps to solving the problem of the honey bees. The six
steps of the PPA Process are: define the problem, gather the evidence, identify
the cause, evaluate the existing policy, develop a solution, select the best
solution.
Day 1 and Day 2: Gather the Evidence
There are three types
of honey bees: drone bees, queen bees, worker bees. Each bee has a special job
in the hive. With your partner, discuss the job of each of the honey bees.
After you research and discuss with your partner, you will write four to five sentences
about why each of the honey bees are important to the hive.
Use the resources below
to help you learn more:
*
The Drone Bee * The
Worker Bee
*
The Queen Bee * Inside the Hive
Day 3: Gather the Evidence
With your partner, read
and discuss what the benefits of having honey bees are. Write three reasons why
honey bees are important.
Use the resources below
to help you learn more about how honey bees help the Earth:
Day 4: Identify the Causes
Using the link below
read and write about what is causing the honey bees to become extinct.
*
Why Are They Becoming Extinct
Day 5: Evaluate the Existing
Policy
Now that we know more
about the honey bees and what is causing them to become extinct, use the link
below to read more about some policies that have been put in place.
Day 6: Develop A Solution
With your partner, you
will create a Flipgrid informing others about the benefits of honey bees and
why they are important to the Earth. Remember to use the information from the
resources that you learned about during your research.
EVALUATION
CONCLUSION
In
this unit, we learned about why honey bees are considered to be an endangered
species. Let us reflect on what we have learned through these questions:
* What are some benefits
of honey bees?
* What is the job
of each honey bee?
* What are some
ways that we can save the honey bees?
