INTRODUCTION

400 years ago, Native Americans of New York relied on natural resources to meet their basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter.   The Native Americans of New York created patterns of organization and governance to manage their societies. Each Native American group developed a unique way of life with a shared set of customs, beliefs and values.

European exploration led to colonization of the region of New York once solely inhabited by Native Americans.  As a result, Native Americans' ways of living change.
