Millions of Children Are
Subjected to Child Labor |
Locations |
Africa, Asia and Latin America |
Social Problem |
Millions of children are
forced to work |
Introduction |
Have you ever wished you had a job? How
many times have you hoped you didn’t have to ask your parents to buy you
things? That’s O.K. since it’s quite common that many children have those
desires every now and then. However, as the saying goes “be careful of what
you wish”. Most people agree that every child should
be able to have adequate care, love, protection, housing, food, clothing,
healthcare, playtime and a quality education. These elements and basic
rights help children develop into strong adults. Unfortunately, millions of children in
developing nations have to work full time. According to the United Nations, “Around
the world, some 160 million children work to earn a living, instead of going
to school. That’s almost one in every 10 children.” Also, the World
Vision reports how “millions
of children engaged in child labor, work in
jobs that deprive them of their childhood, interfere with schooling, or harm
their mental, physical, or social development. Nearly half of them — 79
million children — work under hazardous conditions.” |
Vocabulary |
The International
Labour Organization defines child labor as
the exploitation of children who are deprived of their childhood by work that
prevents them from attending school or causes physical, mental, or social
harm. Children are especially vulnerable
to injuries in their early developmental years, even
though physical and mental health problems may not be evident for years. |
Task
*Regions of Focus |
As responsible world citizens and
scholars, you have the opportunity to research the important global problem
of child labor. Imagine that you are high school students applying for an
internship with the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF. Six winning
groups will travel and spend 4 weeks (Summer of 2024) investigating child
labor in Africa, Latin America or Asia. Your project has to be extremely
creative, have solid resources and provide a clear, coherent message
highlighting the social problem to bring awareness to the issue of child
labor. Don’t forget, there are
many other schools submitting projects, so yours MUST go above and beyond! Your team will create and present
a Google Slides Presentation that includes the PPA Process to examine
the main causes, realities, effects of child labor and strategies to combat
this alarming human rights’ violation. -Group 1- Africa -Children working in the mines of the Democratic Republic
of the Congo —----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -Group 2- Asia -Boys working in one of
India’s brick factories -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -Group 3- Latin America -Many children work on farms in Mexico
-Boy works as a shoe shiner in Mexico |
Process |
-The class will be
divided into 3 groups focusing on Africa, Asia or Latin America. -Each group will have 4-5
class members. -Each research group will
have to create & present a Google Slides Presentation
examining the global social problem of child labor. -Each presentation will
include the Six Steps of the Public Policy Analyst Model. -Remember to review the
Sample PPA Presentation that I modeled in class, so that you can familiarize
yourselves with the project requirements. -Each group should read
and summarize relevant information from 3-4 of the online articles and/or
videos under the “Resources” section. Six Steps of the Public

Conclusion |
In conclusion, by using the
Six Steps of the Public Policy Analyst Model (PPA), each group will
investigate the global phenomenon of child labor. Your group’s Presentation
will provide background information, identify the main causes and effects of
the focus problem, then research existing policies. You will finalize your
project by proposing your own solutions to the problem. Historians, by
completing this group project, you will become experts in using the PPA-Steps
while exploring a critical global social issue!! |
Standards |
Write routinely over
extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and
shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of
discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences. Determine the central
ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate
summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions. Identify key steps in
a text's description of a process related to history/social studies (e.g.,
how a bill becomes law, how interest rates are raised or lowered). Integrate visual
information (e.g., in charts, graphs, photographs, videos, or maps) with other
information in print and digital texts. CHILD
LABOR IS A SOCIAL CRIME, EVERY CHILD HAS A RIGHT TO SHINE!! |
