We will generate ways to prevent the many forms of school violence through writing and speaking.

TASKS

     Task #1

You will complete a Google Slides presentation analyzing school violence at FDA using the PPA method.

 

     Task #2

You will create and distribute a local survey on school violence.

 

     Task #3

PROCESS/RESOURCES

TASK #1 - PPA Slides (In Groups)

Day 1

     Create a Google Slides Presentation

     Name the presentation: “PPA Slides/First and Last Name(s)”

     1st Slide: Cover Page

Create a cover page with your name(s), class period, and the social issue we are covering- school violence.

 

     2nd Slide: Define the Problem

     After watching the introduction video, complete and post the “Defining the Social Problem” worksheet.

**Make sure to include undesirable social conditions that result from school violence.

 

 

Day 2

     3rd Slide: Gather the Evidence

Now it is time for you to prove that your problem exists!

     Use CDC worksheet and CDC website for information.

     Complete and post the “Gathering Evidence” worksheet. Cite 3-5 pieces of evidence. Statistics, graphs, interviews, etc… are acceptable evidence.

     Complete the FDA survey on school violence as part of your evidence.

     Found your own evidence? Great! You must evaluate each source you cite with the C.R.A.A.P worksheet. The source must pass the C.R.A.A.P to be included in the slides.

 

 

Day 3

     4th Slide: Identifying Problems

Time to ask the big question, why? Let’s figure out why cyberbullying happens. We must know the causes and factors in order to have effective prevention.

     Use CDC Risks and Protective Factors for information.

     Complete and post findings for the  Identifying Problems worksheet.

 

 

Day 4

     5th Slide: Evaluate an Existing Policy

     Read New York State Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE) initiative.

     Read New York State’s Office of Mental Health prevention plan.

     Complete and post findings for the Evaluating Public Policies worksheet.

 

Day 5

     6th Slide: Develop Solutions

So now that you are an expert in school violence and have evaluated two policies, what are some solutions or preventions that can be put in place to make school safer?

 

     Use Making the Grade: Preventing School Violence for examples.

     Complete and post findings for the  Developing Public Policy Solutions worksheet.

 

Day 6

     7th Slide: Select the Best Public Policy Solution (Feasibility vs. Effectiveness)

 

     Use NY State’s SAFE Act for information.

             Complete and post findings for the  Selecting the Best Public Policy Solution worksheet.

 

Day 7

Task #2 Public Service Announcement (Pairs or groups of 4)

 

Step 1: What is a Public Service Announcement (PSA)?

     Watch this Sandy Hook PSA for gun violence.

 

     Complete this NearPod on Rhetorical Techniques: Ethos, Pathos, Logos.

 

     Answer these questions on paper or in a Google Document.

1. What is the main message of the PSA? 2. Does the message persuade you? Why or why not?

3. How did the producers use words and pictures to get across their message?

4. How did the actors use rhetorical techniques (ethos, pathos, logos) to persuade you?

5. If you were going to film a PSA about this topic, list two changes you would make in it.

 

 

Day 8

Step 2: Plan your own PSA

Now that you have all the information and solutions from your PPA to help prevent school violence, let’s make it a PSA!

     Choose to do a Google Slides presentation, 1 minute video, or a poster board.

     Choose and complete the best storyboard for your PSA draft here.

Remember

 1. How could you discuss the reasons in the video?

2.How do you convince people to listen to your message using rhetorical techniques?

3. What are your facts? How will you share these facts dramatically?

 

 

Day 9 Step 3: Create PSA

Let’s bring your PSA to life!

     Create your Google slides presentation, video, or poster.
