INTRODUCTION:

Last year the field in Mariposa Grove was a place Monarch Caterpillars could live because they had milk weed plants to eat. Now that it is a Garden, there are no monarch caterpillars. What has happened to the Monarch Caterpillars?

TASK:  You will become scientist who will figure out why there are no caterpillars in the garden. Investigate how plants and animals get what they need to live and grow. Make a new plan for the garden that will provide for the needs of monarch caterpillars and produce vegetables.

PROCESS RESOURCES:

The class will do a whole group lesson. I will remind students we need to be scientists and figure out what has changed in the area. Now that the Field has become the garden, the monarch caterpillars no longer live there.

CONCLUSION:

You have read the unit books to learn that monarch caterpillars eat milkweed plants. Using your observations that animals can only live where they can get the food they need, as a class you discussed and recorded an explanation of why there are no monarch caterpillars in the Garden, which you will share with the children from Mariposa Grove.
