INTRODUCTION

 

Solid waste is “any garbage or refuse, sludge from a wastewater treatment plant, water supply treatment plant, or air pollution control facility and other discarded material, resulting from industrial, commercial, mining, and agricultural operations, and from community activities.” 

 

Solid wastes in New York City not properly disposed can create more problems – litter and rodents on the streets and the subway stations, pollution of the city’s water and air, dramatic weather changes, diseases, etc.

 

Solid waste disposal methods require money. They can provide short and/or long-term solutions to some, if not all the environmental problems the city and the world are experiencing now. On the other hand, they can also negatively impact the environment. There is no perfect solution to waste. But choosing the one that has the least negative impact(s) for NYC’s dollar(s) spent is a MUST if we have to put a stop to these environmental problems.

You will do a thorough research on your assigned solid waste disposal method with the use of the Public Policy Analyst (PPA) steps.  

 

Information include, but not limited to the definition and/or description of the waste disposal method, the types of solid wastes involved, and the advantages and disadvantages of using it.

 

In addition, you will prepare the final product.  Suggested products include, but not limited, to a term paper, PowerPoint or poster board presentation, etc.

Your teacher will divide the class into different groups (3-4 students in a group).  The group will be assigned a solid waste disposal method.  You will do a thorough research on your assigned method with the use of the Public Policy Analyst (PPA) steps.
